Paul Barnes' "New Generations" Album Released!

"Orange Mountain Music proudly releases pianist Paul Barnes newest release New Generations. New Generations celebrates Barnes's two decade-old association and collaboration with composer Philip Glass (b.1937) and an incredible roster of younger composers including Jason Bahr, N.Lincoln Hanks, Zack Stanton, Ivan Moody, Lucas Floyd, and Jonah Gallagher. The repertoire represented on this recording includes many world premieres as well as new interpretations of the recently published piano etudes by Philip Glass. This recital also showcases the little known gem Dreaming Awake (2003) by Philip Glass.    

In 2015-16, Paul Barnes celebrates twenty years of collaboration with Philip Glass.  Glass composed his Second Piano Concerto for Barnes and New Generations represents the fourth album which Barnes has released on OMM including the much heralded album of piano transcriptions from Glass's operas Orphee Suite, Concerto Project Vol. 2 (which includes Piano Concerto No.2) and The American Virtuoso which focuses on the tradition of virtuoso piano music written by American composers and now New Generations."

New Collaboration With Nicholas Phillips!

Happy to announce a new collaboration with pianist Nicholas Phillips! Nick heard my previous collections of Piano Thoughts, as well as other clips online, and reached out to me. I will be writing Piano Thoughts. Vol. 3 for him, to be included on a tour of "American character pieces." Here are Nick's words on the project:

"I have wanted to work with Lucas Floyd on something since I first heard his Piano Thoughts, Vol. 1 last year and read through the score. I've enjoyed hearing other pieces for piano he has written since then, and am drawn into the sonic world he creates, so I'm definitely excited that he will be writing me a new piece for 2016.  I'll be touring a program featuring 21st century American piano character pieces, so his miniatures will be a great addition."

The premiere will take place in late April at the Center for New Music in San Francisco.

Paul Barnes to Release Album of New Works (Including Mine!)

Pianist Paul Barnes, who I have collaborated with several times over the last year, recently recorded an album of new works by a "new generation of composers". The album, featuring works by Philip Glass, N. Lincoln Hanks, Jason Bahr, Ivan Moody, Zack Stanton, and Jonah Gallagher, along with myself, will be released in early 2016.
